Its architecture is all-NVMe, with dual-ported Intel Optane SSDs (NVDIMM) for write caching and NVMe-over-fabric support (both Fibre Channel and TCP) for end-to-end low-latency I/O. This enables extremely high IOPS and throughput for demanding workloads. For example, a reference PowerStore 500T configuration sustained up to ~81K IOPS (634 MiB/s) in lab tests with NVMe SSDs.
Dell PowerStore 500T all-NVMe design: The 500T’s dual-node active/active architecture uses NVMe SSDs throughout and Intel Optane persistent memory, delivering sub-millisecond latency on random I/O.
Dell PowerStore 500T high IOPS/Throughput: With NVMe and robust controllers, the 500T can drive tens of thousands of IOPS. (In one test, a fully-populated 500T hit ~81K IOPS.)
Dell PowerStore 500T DRE RAID Protection: Active redundant nodes with Dynamic Resiliency Engine (DRE) RAID provide protection against multiple simultaneous drive failures.
Dell PowerStore 500T Data Services: Always-on compression and deduplication boost usable capacity, and features like snapshots and replication are integrated (as noted in Dell’s spec guide).

Dell PowerStore 500T Scalability and Capacity
Each 500T appliance includes 2 active nodes (2×24-core CPUs) in a 2U chassis with up to 25× 2.5″ NVMe SSD slots. In addition to the base drives, you can attach NVMe expansion enclosures to scale capacity. Multiple 500T appliances can be clustered (scale-out up to 4 nodes) to increase performance and capacity. A 4-appliance cluster can reach roughly 24.6 PB effective capacity with data reduction.
Key points:
Scale-up (expand): Add up to 3 NVMe expansion chassis (each holds 24 NVMe drives) to increase raw capacity.
Scale-out (cluster): Up to 4 appliances in a cluster, combining controllers and capacity. Dell specifies ~24.64 PB effective (6.16 PBe per appliance with 5:1 reduction) in a 4-node cluster.
Redundancy: Dual controllers and dual hot-swappable power supplies per chassis plus DRE RAID, ensure high availability and fault tolerance.
Dell PowerStore 500T Connectivity and Protocols
PowerStore 500T supports multiple front-end interfaces for broad compatibility:
Fibre Channel: Up to 16× 16/32 Gbps FC ports per appliance. NVMe over Fibre Channel is supported for end-to-end NVMe storage networking (high throughput, low latency).
Ethernet (iSCSI/NVMe/TCP): Up to 16× 10 GbE RJ45 ports and up to 24× 10/25 GbE SFP28 ports per appliance. These can serve iSCSI or NVMe/TCP targets.
Unified Protocols: The 500T is a unified array supporting block and file protocols; it natively offers block (FC/iSCSI), NAS (NFS/SMB), and VMware vVols.
Management: Integrated REST API and the “AppsON” capability allow running VMware ESXi or containers directly on the array for certain use cases.
