HPE NonStop NS7 X3 SSD Upgrade Options & Compatibility

5 min read

Replacing a failed drive or adding SSD capacity to an HPE NonStop NS7 X3? The NS7 X3 stores its data on SAS drives behind dedicated Storage CLIMs, and HPE built several NonStop-specific features around those drives. This guide explains the NS7 X3 storage architecture, your SSD upgrade options, and what makes an SSD compatible with an HPE NonStop (Tandem) system.

NS7 X3 Storage Architecture

Like every HPE NonStop (Tandem) system, the NS7 X3 keeps storage separate from its processors. The NonStop CPUs are BL460c Gen10 server blades, and they do not hold customer data drives. All disk and tape access runs through Storage CLIMs (Cluster I/O Modules), which connect to SAS storage enclosures and Fibre Channel storage.

Storage element

NS7 X3 detail

What it means for SSDs

Storage CLIMs

SAS and Fibre Channel connectivity, minimum two per system

Every drive is reached through a Storage CLIM pair

SAS storage enclosures

25 SAS SFF (2.5") drives per enclosure

SSD upgrades and replacements happen here

Supported drives

SAS SFF SSDs and SAS SFF HDDs

Both drive types can be used

SAN storage

Fibre Channel to HPE XP8, XP7 and XP P9500 arrays, plus tape

Array capacity is upgraded on the array side

CLIM count

Up to 56 CLIMs per node, including networking CLIMs

More Storage CLIMs add storage I/O capacity

For NS7 X3 SSD planning, think in terms of Storage CLIM pairs and enclosures, not individual servers.

How HPE Built SSD Support for NonStop X

HPE presented a set of SSD features for NonStop X systems, the family the NS7 X3 belongs to. These features explain why a generic enterprise SSD is not the same as a NonStop drive:

  • Write-intensive drives: HPE offered a 400 GB SAS SSD with high write endurance, rated at 10 drive writes per day.

  • Up to 100 SSDs per Storage CLIM pair: the drive limit per CLIM pair on NonStop X.

  • Dual-ported and hot-pluggable drives: each drive can be reached through two paths and replaced without shutting down.

  • Mirroring with four data paths: mirrored volumes can be reached along four paths.

  • Drive partitioning: each partition gets its own DP2 disk process cache.

  • Volume Level Encryption (VLE): available for NonStop SSDs.

  • Drive health in OSM: the OSM Service Connection shows an SSD wear gauge.

These NonStop features depend on drives that HPE supports for the system, which is why compatibility is checked by part number, not by capacity.

NS7 X3 SSD Upgrade Options

Replacing a Failed Drive in a Mirrored Volume

NonStop volumes are typically mirrored, so the volume stays online through its mirror while the failed drive is replaced. Order a drive with the same HPE part number and bring it back into the mirror using HPE's service procedure for your RVU.

Filling Free Enclosure Bays

If your enclosures have free bays, adding SSDs is the simplest way to grow. SSDs and HDDs can share the same NonStop SAS enclosure, which makes a gradual move to SSD possible.

Converting HDD Volumes to SSD

Moving busy volumes from hard drives to SSDs is a common NS7 X3 upgrade. NonStop storage supports drive partitioning, with each partition getting its own DP2 disk process cache. Plan the move as a data migration with your NonStop team.

Larger SSDs and Mirror Pairs

A larger SSD only helps if HPE supports that capacity for your NS7 X3 configuration and RVU. Both halves of a mirrored volume should match, so plan capacity changes for both drives of the pair.

More Enclosures and Storage CLIMs

When a Storage CLIM pair approaches its drive limit, storage grows with additional enclosures and Storage CLIM pairs. This is a configuration change to plan with your NonStop support team. Our HPE NonStop NS7 X3 upgrade parts overview covers enclosures, cables and CLIM parts.

What to Match When Ordering an NS7 X3 SSD

What to match

Where to find it

Why it matters

HPE part number

Label on the installed drive

The most reliable way to match a NonStop drive

Interface and size

Drive label: SAS, 2.5" SFF

NS7 X3 enclosures use SAS SFF drives

Carrier

The tray on the installed drive

Earlier NonStop X enclosures (HPE D3700) used Smart Carrier drives

Firmware

OSM or your service records

Supported HPE firmware keeps health reporting accurate

Endurance class

Drive label or HPE part description

Write-heavy volumes need write-intensive drives

Capacity

Drive label and your storage plan

Must be supported for your system and RVU

Mirror partner

Your volume configuration

Both halves of a mirror should match

System generation

NS7 X3, not X1 or X2

CLIM and blade hardware differ between generations

When all of these match, the new SSD behaves like the drive it replaces.

Drives Across NS7 Generations

The NS7 X1, X2 and X3 all use Storage CLIMs with SAS enclosures, but the server blades changed with each generation, and the NS7 X3 introduced Gen10-based V3 CLIMs. A drive that worked in an NS7 X2 is not automatically the right part for an NS7 X3. Always start from the HPE part number of the drive installed in your system, and include the generation when you ask for a quote.

FAQ: HPE NonStop NS7 X3 SSDs

Which SSDs are compatible with the HPE NonStop NS7 X3?

2.5" SAS SSDs that HPE supports for the NS7 X3 storage subsystem, with the correct carrier and firmware. The safest match is the same HPE part number as the drive you are replacing. Compatibility depends on the exact system configuration and should be checked before ordering.

How many drives does an NS7 X3 storage enclosure hold?

Each NS7 SAS storage enclosure holds up to 25 SAS SFF drives, which can be SSDs or HDDs.

Can I upgrade SSD capacity on an NS7 X3?

Yes, by adding SSDs to free bays, converting HDD volumes to SSD, adding enclosures and Storage CLIMs, or using larger SSDs where HPE supports the capacity for your configuration.

Can I replace an existing SSD with a larger drive?

Possibly, but check it first. In a mirrored volume, a single larger drive may not add usable capacity, and the new capacity must be supported for your system and RVU.

Do HPE NonStop SSDs require specific firmware?

Use drives with HPE firmware at a level supported for your NonStop RVU. OSM shows SSD wear information, and drives with unsupported firmware may not report it correctly.

Can different SSD capacities be mixed?

Different volumes can use different drives, but both halves of a mirrored volume should match. Check your storage layout before mixing capacities.

Can an NS7 X2 drive be used in an NS7 X3?

Not without checking. Compare the HPE part number with the drives installed in your NS7 X3, and confirm the drive is supported for your RVU.

Are refurbished HPE NonStop NS7 X3 SSDs available?

Yes. server-parts.eu supplies refurbished and tested HPE NonStop SSDs, depending on stock. Each drive is checked against your part number, carrier and firmware requirements before we quote.

How do I identify the correct replacement SSD?

Read the HPE part number from the drive label, note the carrier type and capacity, and send a photo of the label. server-parts.eu can then check the match before you order.
