The HPE NonStop NS3 X3 is the entry-class member of the NonStop X family. It runs the same fault-tolerant HPE NonStop (Tandem) architecture as the high-end NS7 X3, at a smaller scale and a lower price point. HPE positioned it for smaller enterprises, emerging markets, distributed computing and test or development environments.
Like the NS7, the NS3 is a blade system: each NonStop CPU is an HPE ProLiant BL460c server blade in an HPE BladeSystem c7000 Platinum enclosure, connected by an InfiniBand system interconnect.

The NS3 X3 is a compact blade system with entry-class CLIMs, so its parts are not the same as those of the NS7 X3, even though both use BL460c Gen10 blades.

Enclosure and Interconnect
The c7000 Platinum enclosure holds the NonStop CPU blades and the 4X FDR InfiniBand switches of the system interconnect. Power supplies, fans, management modules, InfiniBand switches and cables are the parts that keep the whole system running.
Entry-Class CLIMs
The NS3 X3 uses entry-class CLIMs. IP and Telco CLIMs each provide five 1GbE ports, and Storage CLIMs connect SAS enclosures and Fibre Channel storage, including SAN-attached HPE XP arrays and tape. Entry-class CLIM parts are not always the same as the CLIM parts of an NS7, so match them by part number.
Keeping an NS3 X3 Running After End of Sale
HPE ended sales of the NS3 in October 2021 and replaced it with the rack-server-based HPE NonStop NS4 X4. NS3 X3 systems can stay in production, test and development use for years, and they need spare parts to stay fault tolerant.
NS3 X3 owners usually choose between two paths:
Keep the NS3 X3 running: maintain it with tested replacement parts, and keep critical spares such as SSDs, DIMMs and power supplies on hand.
Move to the NS4 X4: a newer entry-class system with a different hardware platform. Its blades, memory and CLIMs are not interchangeable with NS3 X3 parts.
