The Dell PowerEdge R760 is Dell’s newest 2U dual-socket server, supporting 4th and 5th Gen Intel Xeon CPUs with up to 64 cores each. With DDR5 and PCIe Gen5, it offers faster memory and I/O speed. It handles up to 20% more VDI users and over 50% more SAP users than earlier models, while its improved cooling system cuts fan power use by over 50%. Tests show 160% more work per euro and lower energy use per task—making it great for doing more with fewer servers.

Dell PowerEdge R760 Server Core Architecture Overview

The R760 family shares a common main design that combines new hardware with business-class security and easy management. Main features include:

Processors: Dual-socket support for 4th and 5th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs with up to 64 cores per processor.

Memory: Up to 32 DDR5 DIMM slots (16 per socket) on the R760 and R760xa, supporting up to 8 TB; up to 16 DDR5 DIMMs on the R760xs, supporting 1 TB.

Storage: Flexible drive setups from up to 24 x 2.5" SFF or 12 x 3.5" LFF on the R760, up to 8 front drives on the R760xa (including NVMe and EDSFF), and up to 16 x 2.5" or 12 x 3.5" on the R760xs.

Expansion & I/O: PCIe Gen5 slots (up to 8 on R760, 12 on R760xa, and 6 on R760xs) with modular risers; OCP 3.0 NIC slot on all models.

Security & Management: Dell’s iDRAC9, silicon Root of Trust, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, system lockdown, and Dell OpenManage for full system control.

Dell PowerEdge R760 Server Types

Dell PowerEdge R760 (Mainstream Flagship)

The R760 is a balanced, high-speed server supporting up to 2× 64-core CPUs, 32 DIMMs, 24 SFF or 12 LFF drives, and optional rear storage. It works well for virtualization, database jobs, and general enterprise needs. It also supports up to 2 double-width or 6 single-width GPUs, making it flexible for light acceleration.

Dell PowerEdge R760xa (GPU-Optimized Model)

Built for AI, ML, and GPU-heavy jobs, the R760xa supports up to 4 double-width 400W GPUs or 12 single-width units. Storage is limited to 8 front drives (SFF or EDSFF), and the chassis is deeper for airflow and cooling for top GPUs.

Dell PowerEdge R760xs (Value-Optimized Model)

A low-cost option for standard virtualization and SDS jobs, the R760xs supports up to 2× 32-core CPUs, 16 DIMMs (1 TB max), and various storage setups with up to 8 NVMe drives. GPU support is basic – up to 2× low-power GPUs only.
